About Activation Specification Records (ASRs)
An Activation Specification Record (ASR), which is tied to a product in FlexNet Operations, is a digitally signed XML file describing the licensing terms of a particular product. Local trials and short code activations are implemented by creating an ASR in FlexNet Operations and bundling the ASR with a product. The activation utility for the product uses the bundling ASR to activate a license instead of communicating with the FlexNet Operations server.
The two scenarios supported by FlexNet Operations that use ASRs are local trials and short-code activations.
• | A local trial is typically a time-limited license intended for use as an evaluation license or an emergency license. The application activation utility reads the license rights from the ASR instead of communicating with the server, and installs the rights in trusted storage. A local trial license cannot be returned, repaired, or rehosted. See Local Trials for more information. |
Note:In the FlexNet Publisher Licensing Toolkit, local trial ASRs are referred to as Embedded Activation.
• | A short-code activation is one intended for customers that do not have the network connection resources needed for typical activation transactions, and therefore need to activate a product manually, such as over the telephone. Using a short-code ASR, a customer can provide a short request code and receive a short response code (to be typed into the application interface, for example) over the telephone, without the prohibitively long codes used in typical activations. Unlike a local trial license, a license activated with short-code activation can be returned, repaired, and rehosted. See Short Code ASRs for more information. |
