License Support
Rehosting a License
Moving a license from one machine to another is called rehosting. Batch rehosting is moving groups of licenses from one server to others by:
• | Redistributing – re-allocating licenses for a group of products among various license servers to change the license count of products on different servers |
• | Transferring – moving all of an account’s licenses from one host to another, usually when a host machine crashes and the licenses on it must be moved to a new machine |
Upgrading a License
Changing a license for one version of a product to a license for an improved version of the product is called upgrading. For example, a customer can upgrade a license for Paint 4.0 to one for Paint 5.1.
Upselling a License
Changing a license for one product to a license for another product with more capabilities is called upselling. For example, a customer who has a license for AntiMalware can be upsold to the Total PC Protection package, which includes AntiSpam and ParentalControl in addition to AntiMalware.
Renewing a License
Extending an expiring license is called renewing a license. For example, a customer whose software license expires after one year can renew it for another year.
Correcting a Producer Error
Regeneration of a license may be required because of a producer error, such as incorrect data entry.
Generating an Emergency License
An emergency license is a short term license generated for a customer who cannot use the unexpired license. For example, while a customer’s main computer is being upgraded or repaired, the product must be used temporarily on another computer.
Generating a Stop-Gap License
A stop-gap license is a short term license generated for a customer whose expired license renewal is being processed.
